United Way of New Jersey approached our team to find a new way to spread the word about ALICE—the demographic of Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed individuals. On average, 31% of NJ's county population falls into this fledgling demographic characterization. These individuals and families fall above the poverty line, and as such, are ineligible for welfare programs. They hold jobs and often struggle to keep finances afloat. They make choices like deciding to pay rent or pay medical bills, not both. United Way wanted to drive conversation around the poverty line threshold and how to keep people from falling under it. Working with United Way representatives I led a team to create an interactive infographic (fig. 1, 2, 3) highlighting the struggles and data behind the ALICE demographic. Over the course of our sessions, we explored the data, discussed the target audience, and explored past work from our team's portfolio to give them ideas for potential interactive visualizations. The final product was a key presentation item used during their campaign.
